Instructions
Activities: x 4 groups rotating round (approx 15 mins each):
First Group: Lay out a track with the cones outside, and let the beavers cycle round the track in small groups.
Second Group: Bike maintenance discussion to cover safety equipment and pumping up tires:
Safety Equipment
Equipment needed:
1. Helmet
2. High Vis Jacket
3. Lights
4. Puncture repair kit
5. Spare inner tube
Ask the Beavers:
1. What do you think safety equipment is?
2. Why do you think it is important to wear or carry safety equipment?
3. What may happen if you didn’t wear safety equipment?
4. Who needs to wear the safety equipment?
5. Why do I need to tell someone where I’m going or which route I’m taking?
6. What basic checks should you do before riding your bike? E.g. tyre pressure, brakes work
7. Why are there often reflectors on wheels, seat post, bell & handlebars?
Explain to the beavers the purpose of the safety equipment and discuss the different types of equipment and when they may be used at different stages of the day (day & night).
Demonstrate to the Beavers how to put on a helmet correctly and they all put their helmets on at the previous meeting.
Pumping up a Tyre
Equipment needed:
1. Bike and Pumps
Ask the Beavers:
1. What is the pump used for?
2. Where should you keep your pump when you go for a cycle?
Demonstrate to the Beavers how to pump up a tyre and then let each beaver have a turn.
Third Group: Beavers will work as a team to dress a leader (or other member of the group) up for his bike ride. They will assume that it might be dark and that he may run into problems so they have to kit him out with those ideas in mind. Beavers can also explain why they have not included the less obvious items such as a long scarf or dark glasses
Resources: A selection of clothes including reflective jacket, helmet, gloves and some ridiculous items such as a straw hat, dressing gown, high heeled shoes. Bike lights, puncture repair kit, phone, money, and silly items such as a frying pan,
Forth Group: Play Road Safety Susie game
