SCOUTS OWN - Geese
This section of the morning is called Scout’s Own, and it’s a short bit of time to have a think about the bigger stuff in life.
Have you ever wondered why geese fly in a V formation?
Lets have a look at a V formation...... (create V using Scouts, Cubs and Beavers - encourage them to flap their wings.)
What’s happening is, the bird at the front creates an uplift in the air for the bird behind it. So THIS bird (point at Scout) flapping, makes it easier for HIM (next scout), and HE makes it easier for HIM etc down the line.
SO, everyone can fly more easily, and therefore further, than they would be able to if they flew side by side.
BUT, it’s harder for the one at the front.
SO, after a while the one at the front will fly to the back (action this out) and one of the other geese will take it’s place at the front instead.
MEANWHILE, all the geese honk from behind to encourage the goose at the front to keep going (action this, with as much noise as possible, get other scouts to join in).

AND, when a goose gets sick and can’t keep up, and has to stop and rest, two other geese will go with it to help it and protect it until it gets better.
SO, geese help each other, and work together. Because they help each other and work together, they can fly better and fly further.

Now then, when a scout says their promise, which is, ON MY HONOUR, I PROMISE THAT I WILL DO MY BEST, TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD AND TO THE QUEEN, TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, AND TO KEEP THE SCOUT LAW.
Or when a Cub says their promise, which is similar, or a Beaver says their promise...
When you guys promise to “help other people” when you are being just like geese and.....
SUPPORTING EACH OTHER by not leaving all the work to one person.
ENCOURAGING EACH OTHER like the geese do by honking.
and by LOOKING AFTER those people around you who are not doing so well....
when WE ALL work together - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, leaders, parents - in our homes, our schools, our clubs, our workplaces, wherever - when we all work together, just like the geese, we will ALL be able to live better and go further.
