Instructions

Introduction
The Brownies will learn to tie the Reef Knot and Friendship Knot and understand their uses.

Instructions
Show the Brownies how to tie the Reef Knot and Friendship Knot. Get them to practice. You can then organise running games in their Sixes. Get the Brownies to run to a chair at the end of the hall and tie the knot called and return to their Six.

See the attached file for pictures of the knots.

Debrief
Explain the various uses of each knot:
- The Reef Knot or square knot is used to tie the two ends of a single line together so that they will secure something, for example a bundle of objects, that is unlikely to move much. It is a flat knot used in bandages e.g. a sling.
- The Friendship Knot is a decorative knot which is used to tie neckerchiefs, lanyards and in Chinese knotting. Guides use it to tie a friend’s neckerchief.
