Instructions
Introduction
The Guides will learn to build an outdoor shelter.
Instructions
•Divide the Guides into their Patrols.
•Give each Patrol a groundsheet or reusable plastic sheet, some rope and some tent pegs or ask them to use stones.
•Use trees to tie the ropes to (or chairs if you have to do this activity indoors). If using trees, tie sacking around each tree to protect from the rope.
•Tie one end of your rope to a tree using a round turn and two half hitches knot. Secure well. Tie the other end to another tree nearby using the same knot. Have the knots at a height where your groundsheet will reach the ground.
•Place the groundsheet over the rope.
•Extend the groundsheet to create a shelter.
•Secure the base of the groundsheet with stones or tent pegs.
•Fit all the Patrol in the shelter.
(Optional: The Leaders can spray water over the shelter to see if it works).
Note: Clean and dry the groundsheet before packing it away for re-use.
Discussion
Discuss with the Guides when a shelter may be necessary.
