Instructions
Introduction: We rely on our five senses to provide information about the world around us. Our senses allow us to enjoy our food, the sound of music, the smell of a cake baking. Imagine what we would miss out on if we could not smell. This activity shows us how much we know just from our sense of smell.
Instructions: Smell:
Set up as many stations as you have Sixes. Have a Leader at each station. At each station have 3 or 4 sealed containers with something smelly inside. (If the containers are clear put a piece of cloth soaked in the smell into the container)
Position a Six at each station with all the Brownies blindfolded. The Sixer has a piece of paper with the Six name at the top. The Leader holds one of the containers under each Brownies' nose in turn and they decide what is in the jar. Majority deciding. The Leader writes down letter/number along with the Sixes' decision. When the Brownies have finished they move to the next station. Once they have been to all stations they sit in their Sixes and Brown Owl asks them in turn what the smell from each container was and tells them the correct answer.
Debrief/Discussion
This game can also be played in pairs with girls taking turns as to who is blindfolded at each station, or, in Sixes with Brownies taking turns at not being blindfolded and doing the writing at each station.
Remind the Brownies that our sense of smell protects us from eating bad food and helps us enjoy the smell of the outdoor (a mown lawn etc) and indoors (dinner cooking).
