Patrols cooking one-pot veggie meals - either Tomato and Basil Pasta, or 'Beef' Risotto
(Veggie so that the Scouts don't need to worry too much about making sure everything is properly cooked before eating it!!)
Ingredients for Tomato and Basil Pasta
300g fusilli pasta
1 tin chopped tomatoes
2 cups vegetable stock
1/2 medium-size yellow onion, sliced
4 garlic cloves, sliced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/3 cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper (optional)
1 (150g) bag baby spinach
Freshly grated cheese
1. Place first 9 ingredients and, if desired, dried crushed red pepper in a billy in order of ingredient list.
Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat (about 12 to 15 minutes). Reduce heat to medium-low, and cook, covered, 10 to 12 minutes or until pasta is slightly al dente, stirring at 5-minute intervals.
2. Remove from heat, and stir in spinach. Cover and let stand 10 minutes. Stir just before serving. Serve with Parmesan cheese.
Ingredients for Beef Risotto
1 tbs oil
500g veggie mince
1 onion finely chopped
2 garlic clove chopped
1 cup long-grain white rice
1 carrot grated
3 tbs tomato paste
1 tin chopped tomato
2 cup vegetable stock
1/2 cup frozen peas
1/2 cup parmesan cheese grated
1 tbs fresh basil *to taste chopped
Sauté onion and garlic in oil until onion is soft.
Add mince and brown, breaking mince up well while cooking.
Add rice and stir. Cook for 1 minute.
Add carrot, tomato paste, chopped tomatoes and beef stock.
Cook, on low heat, stirring often, until most of the liquid is absorbed.
Add peas, and cook for a few minutes.
Test rice and add more stock if rice is still hard. Cook until rice is tender.
Just before serving, add most of cheese and chopped basil.
Serve sprinkled with rest of cheese.

Scouts to bring their own eating irons and crockery
Each patrol get:
1x camping stove and 1 gas canister
1x wooden spoon
1x serving spoon
1x chopping board
1x sharp knife
1x tin opener
1x tin tomatoes
1x veggie stock cube
3x garlic cloves
then the additional items to make their meal dependent on which they chose.
Preparation of the food to happen in the hall, cooking to happen in the playground.
Scouts to clear away rubbish from hall whilst other scouts are preparing to cook.
Scouts to cook meal and then enjoy the food they have prepared.
Billies will be washed by leaders later.
Stoves will be left to cool and then packed away by patrol leader.
