Instructions

Talk:
How can we protect ourselves? We have 5 senses:

EYES – most useful, to see hazards
EARS – listen for traffic
NOSE – smell danger, e.g. fire, gas
TASTE – bad food
FEEL – sharp edges

Reading from Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the hills --
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip --
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you --
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm --
He will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forever more.

Observation Games:
Here are a few games to get the young people to use different senses (see senses games for other ideas)

Listening
Tape recorded sounds:
a) in the home e.g. doorbell, phone, vacuum, toilet flushing, filling kettle, etc.
b) theme tunes to children’s television programmes.

Smell or Taste
NOTE: Do not use anything that is distasteful or bad smelling. Also boys may have allergies.
Blindfold the young people and get them to taste or smell the various substances.

Touch
Blindfold each boy and pass around different objects. The young people have to remember at the end of the game what objects they have touched.
Ideas: fruit, coin, balloon, keys, etc.

Sight
Use a large picture or poster. The young people are given a set time to look at the picture. They then tell the leader who makes a list of what they have seen.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, although we cannot see you, help us to know that you protect us from danger and are always near. Amen
