Description

Bring in different types of maps for Beavers to explore what a map can be used for.

Resources

Any combination of the following [the more, the better]:

- OS Map
- local A-Z
- Road Map
- Atlas
- Map of the UK
- Theme Park Map
- Zoo map
- Shopping Centre map
- Sat Nav [use the demo mode found on most devices]

Instructions

Show the Beavers the different types of map, and ask them to identify each one and how it could be used.

Talk about why maps are helpful in each situation, and let them explore the maps in pairs or small groups.

We run this as a 5-10 minute base in Lodges, with the other bases being: draw a map, set a compass on a basic map of the UK, and Map Symbols Pairs.
