A session with a variety of activities based around pancakes

Resources

Before the session
- print out 1 copy of both files "24 pancakes from around the world" and stick up randomly around the meeting place.
- print out enough copies of "The School of Pancakes" sheet (print landscape & fold vertically in 4 sections with "The School of Pancakes" on the front) for each Cub, plus a pen

Other resources
GAME - each Six needs one frying pan and one of those cleaning sponges c. 1cm thick x 12cm long x 6cm wide....makes a good "pancake" substitute for flipping

BASES:
Science - needs 16 cans (8 x Baked Bean/equivalent - 4 with holes, 4 without, 8 x tuna/equivalent - 4 with holes, 4 without), drill holes in sides, tea lights, matches, fluffy pancake batter mix, oil, spatulas, plates, tables....NB pancakes may not be suitable to eat :-)!
Sport - tape measures, pre-bought pancakes (usually quite dry & very robust!!), 2 frying pans.
Other activities - pens/crayons

Instructions

GAME : Pancake relay (in Sixes, with one frying pan and sponge pad each Six).
- in turn run to the end of the hall and back, stopping once each way to "flip the pancake" i.e. the sponge pad. If pancake/sponge is dropped, the flip needs to be re-done, as Cub cannot continue until flip successfully completed.
- winning Six back, sitting crossed legged on the floor, in a line

BASES: The School of Pancakes

6.45 The School of Pancakes (3 bases - 15 mins on each). Split Cubs into 3 groups

1. Science - Split Cubs into pairs & give each pair 1 BB can with holes & 1 BB can without & 1 tuna can with holes & 1 without, plus 4 tea lights, brush a little oil on the top of the can before starting. Supervise lighting of tea lights & spooning on of batter. Ask Cubs to report on what they find.
2. Sport - involve the Cubs in measuring & recording results
3. English, Music, Art, Geography, History -...fill in


7.30 Pancakes (properly!) cooked in kitchen by helper/leader whilst bases running - served to Cubs with lemon & sugar.
7.40 answers to word search & quiz whilst Cubs eating
7.50 performance of selected pancake poems & celebrate pancake sporting achievements
