Fun way to plan for a hike - Designed for Beavers but could be adapted for Cubs/ Scouts etc
a rucksack (or a few)
Items genuinely needed for a hike - hiking boots, drink, compass, map, snack, pak-a-mac, first aid kit, phone etc
Items not needed for a hike - gadgets, brick, teddy, flip flops, and any other random things you can think of.
Display all of the items on a table and ask the young people to collect the items they will need for a hike and put them in the rucksack. Then they have a chance to explain why they choose each item and why they didn't choose the other items.
This can be run as a small group activity or individually .
