Forces Human Arch & Egg in the Carton
Introduction
 Understand why and where arches are used in engineering and nature (to span large openings like bridges over valleys and rivers, vaulted ceilings in churches etc. as a cost effective, beautiful and functional shape that is adaptable for many materials)
 Understand what the limitations are. The supports at the bottom of the arch are critical in the design and strength of the arch (buttresses).
 Feel where the forces in the human arch to understand how an arch works. To be aware of the path of the weight through the body (the forces should be felt as a compression on the hands. It should be clear that it is a different to what they would feel if each one put their chest on one chair and feet on another spanning the same distance as the arch and put a weight in the middle. This would be a bending force)

Instructions
1) Discuss the principles of Force (see attached file)

2) Complete the egg in the carton activity (see attached file)

3) Take part in activities to understand what the main issue with arches are for engineers is (see overleaf)
