Pots
Soil
Observation sheet (see attached)
lollipop sticks
Pencils

Instructions
1. Explain that this activity is both an experiment and part of the Beaver promise to love our world. Explain that flowers are important for many creatures like bees who help pollinate our world.
2. Plant seeds with the young people and explain what a seed needs to grow:
Step 1 - Use a good multi-purpose compost to fill 7.5cm pots to 1cm below the rim. Tap each pot to settle the compost and firm gently
Step 2 - Sow one seed per pot – sunflowers germinate reliably and form large seedlings. Poke the seed into the compost.
Step 3 - Cover the sunflower seed with about 1.5cm of compost. Label each pot and water well so that the compost is just moist throughout.
(Instructions from https://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/grow-plants/how-to-grow-sunflowers-from-seed/)
3.Get the young people to predict events as per record sheet.
We will look at the seeds each week to see what is happening and record actual events using the sheet. If they become fully grown sunflowers it will also complete the 'Help' criteria for Gardener Badge.
