Instructions
Challenge A: Safety Sketch
Ask the Guides to carry out a safety audit of pedestrian and cycle routes in their town/village area.
They should draw/sketch a map and mark on it the places where cyclists and pedestrians face dangers on the road e.g. a cycle lane disappears, there is no footpath or place to cross.
Why not forward their findings to local County Councillors?
Challenge B
Complete the road safety quiz (overleaf)
Challenge C
Guides that cycle should carry out a safety check on their bicycle.
• Can you reach the handle bars easily?
• When sitting on the saddle, do both feet touch the ground, legs straight, heels slightly raised?
• Can you rest your fingers comfortably on the brakes ready to react quickly?
• Lift each wheel, in turn, off the ground and spin it. Apply the brake. Do the brakes stop the wheel spinning effectively?
• Are the brake blocks in the right place, not touching the tyre?
• Are the brake blocks wearing evenly?
• Is your chain well-oiled and at the correct tension?
• Are your gears working properly?
• Are your tyres well pumped up, with a good depth of tread pattern showing all the way around?
