Give examples of common household poisons and explain why it is important to store and label them correctly. Give information on what steps should be taken if poisons are swallowed.
Bring some examples of the following:
• Cleaning products
• Ointments
• Furniture polish
• Pesticides
• Paint thinner
• Batteries
• Anti-freeze
• Drain cleaners
Ask the Guides to use the attached list of labels and find which one is on the packaging of the chemical. Log onto www.clpireland.ie
for information on the dangers of these chemicals and how to store safely.
Ask the Guides in their Patrols to outline the procedure that they think should be used in the event that any chemical is swallowed.
Steps to be taken if swallowed:
1. Dial 999 immediately
2. Remove anything that may be in the person’s mouth
3. Read the label on the packaging, if relevant, and follow instructions for accidental consumption
