Description

Memory / teaching game based on the "What have the Romans done for us?" sketch from Monty Python's Life of Brian.

Use this game to help scouts think about a list of things related to the topic in question.

Resources

Scouts, and a "speaker's stick"

Instructions

Two or three leaders re-enact the "What have the Roman's done for us" sketch to give the scouts the idea of the game.

Then, pick a topic, it could be anything, so far we've used the following:-

Tawd Vale Scout Camp
Personal Kit list
Food & consumables kit list
Tent and equipment kit list
Scouting

You could actually use any topic for this game - be creative with it.

Lead scout (or leader) starts the game by asking:-

"What do I need to pack in my rucksack?" then passes the speaker stick to the next scout, who responds with one item, e.g. "A wash kit", then the scout passes the speaker stick to the next scout.

Lead scout then replies "Yes, but apart from a wash kit, what else do I need to pack in my rucksack?"

The next scout replies with another item, e.g. "A warm hat" and then passes the speaker stick to the next scout in turn.

Lead Scout then replies "Yes, but apart from a wash kit and a warm hat, what else do I need to pack in my rucksack?"

etc. until everyone has had a chance to contribute one item, at which point the "Lead scout" replies to the last scout to contribute with "Oh, shut up!"

Scouts should be given 15 - 20 seconds to contribute an item, before moving on to the next scout.

The more scouts you have, the more challenging the game, and the more fun they have with it.

This game gets the scouts really thinking about the topic, and challenges them to find strategies to memorise the lists.

A great game to play on a troop night or at camp when the weather is abysmal and they need to be occupied.
