Instructions
Before, do a short group teach about the options:
• The number for an emergency service is: 999 or 112
• The services available are: Police, Fire, Ambulance, Coastguard
• When you need help quickly, you call 999. You call 999 when something bad is happening now. You call 999 when you think something bad will happen soon.
• The number for non-emergency medical problems: 111
• The number for non-emergency police issues: 101
• The RSPCA on 0300 1234 999, Council, Water, Gas etc all have their own
• If you call 999 what happens?
- Hello, Emergency Operator which service do you require?
- What number are you calling from?
- Putting you through
- What is the problem?
- Where are you?
• Hoax calls - what are they? How dangerous?
Split into groups and put at one end of the hall. Set four chairs at the other end with post-its saying "999" (red chair), "101" (blue chair), "111" (green chair), "Other" (yellow chair). The red chair also has the phone and a leader standing by it. In front of the chairs is the pile of scenario cards.
Set Cubs off 2 or 4 at a time, they run up (to add urgency) and pick a card off the central pile, then decide how to deal with it, put it on the appropriate chair. If the answer is 999 they go to the dummy phone, dial 999, ask for the service they require.
Leaders need to keep them moving and add a sense of urgency or they tend to stall, thinking too hard and slow the game down.
At the end, gather round and for each chair look at each card on it, briefly discussing whether we all agree that was correct and re-allocating as necessary.
