Instructions

Here are some activities that you can do during your hike/bike ride. We're doing this in a wooded area, so some things may not be suitable in open/urban areas:

Make Santa's Grotto:
- shelter/den-making with fallen-down branches/sticks. Could decorate with tinsel.

Flying Reindeer:
- for cyclists - learn to tie knots by tying a rope onto an adult's bike, and making hand holds/loops, and then pull the adult (aka reindeer) along
- for hikers - take a slack-line, attach between trees, and do a tight-rope

Ornament-on-Spoon-Race:
- bing a bourbel per person, and a spoon, and then have an egg-and-spoon-race with Christmas bourbels

Father Christmas Navigation:
- install something like Strava or any biking/running app on your phone (or use a walking GPS device) and give them bearings & paces to follow, while recording your route. At the end, look at the app and they'll see they "drew" a star. (So the bearings you need to give them need to draw out a star - suggest not planning it in advance and just working out the route when you find open space).

Feeding Reindeer:
- eat your packed lunch

Christmas Drinks:
- tell them about how too much drink may cause people to go unconscious (or if you'd rather avoid this subject, "Santa hit his head on a branch while flying through the trees") and how "unconscious but breathing people need to be put in the recovery position". Teach/practise that (potentially take a tarp to lie on).

Christmas Tree Ball Toss:
- draw/scratch/mark-out a Christmas tree on the ground, and give each area a score. Take bean-bags, and throw them. 5 throws each, count up points.

Antler Ring Toss:
- make reindeer antlers out of a few sticks, stuck in the ground. Take little plastic hoops, and throw them. Point per hoop that lands on the "antlers"

Wish-list Code Breaking:
- write out a Christmas-Wish-List in a suitable code and tell them that "a spy's child has written what they want for Christmas in code - can you help Father Christmas decipher it?"
- alternatively, use the attached document - the morse code spells "Mince Pie" and obviously, if they crack the code, they get a mince pie. They can then write something they want for someone else to crack.

Santa's helers:
- in twos or threes, each group has a present that fell off Santa's sleigh - they must make something that transports it in the air, 100 metres. But social distancing is important so once it's in the air, they cannot get within 2m of it. If they succeed, they can open the present and get the prize (sweets etc). Supply string/scissors, and do in a wooded area where they can tie things to sticks.
