Description
Knot teaching and relay race utilising PL's and APL's to do the instructing. Great way for them to start providing leadership and good way to get the whole patrol working together as a team.

Instructions
Utilising the knowledge of the PL and APL give each Patrol 10 minutes for the PL and APL to teach their Patrol a Reef Knot and Clove Hitch.
Once the Scouts have been taught run a relay race. Scouts to line up in patrols and have a base for each patrol at the other end of the hall (chair/bench with a piece of rope and spar). Scouts in turn to run to their base where a leader will ask them to tie a Reef Knot or Clove Hitch. Scouts can only leave their base once they have successfully tied the knot (leaders can help if the Scouts are really struggling). Once tied the Scout run backs and tags the next Scout for them to go and tie their knot. I award points to the winning patrol which gets added onto the weekly points totals (10 pints for 1st place, 5 points for 2nd place and 3 points or 3rd place) - this generally focuses minds and ensures the PL's and APL's take it seriously.
This enables the PL's and APL's to learn how to teach basic Scout skills and it is worthwhile running this a couple of times in a term to enable the Scouts to learn the knots and give the PL and APL chance to refine how they teach. I spend a few minutes after talking to the Scouts about what worked well and what could be done better next time.
This can be done with other knots as well.
