History of Kim’s Game: Simple game to teach situational awareness, observation training, and develop memory skills. The name of this game is derived from Rudyard Kipling’s 1901 novel ‘Kim’, in which the hero, Kim, plays a game during his training for government intelligence work (a spy). Kim was an Irish orphan who grew up in India. His training began with him being shown a tray of stones and gems for one minute. After covering the tray, he had to recall how many he saw and describe them.
Kims Game #1 – Traditional Game
1. Collect 20 small objects and place spread out on a tray
2. Tell everyone they have 1 minute to look at the objects
3. Cover the items so they are not visible once the time is up
4. Each player writes down everything from the tray that they can remember
5. When everyone is finished, take the cover off and find out who remembered the most. They are the winner.
6. Extra challenge: Play again with different items, but this time they can not name the object, but have to describe the object e.g. if there was a paperclip, “silver, metal wire, bent in an oval shape”
Jumble Sale - Each Guide brings to the meeting an item. Each Guide one by one puts her item in, after a given time cover the items and play as per the traditional version. However, follow with a final task of naming who brought what
Kims Game #2 – Elimination Game
1. Collect 20 small objects and place spread out on a tray
2. Tell everyone they have 30 seconds to look at the objects
3. All players close their eyes and you remove an item/s
4. Players open eyes and work out what item is missing – extra step is to give details of the object
As the game continues, you can increase the number of objects that you remove from the tray.
Kims Game #3 – Hiding Game
1. Place 2 or 3 objects in a bag (that is not see-through)
2. Each player has a turn. They have 1 minute to feel the contents of the bag to memorise the contents by feel
3. Players then write down each item and describe as much as they can – the best descriptions win
Kims Game #4 - Nature Clock
1. Using twelve natural objects found outside the meeting place (and which may be taken) are set out in a circle as a clock dial
2. After a reasonable time of looking at them, each patrol or individual goes outside and collects the items and re-creates the clock from memory
Kims Game #5 - Box Game
1. One leader has a box with the objects in it. The number of objects is up to you
2. The other leader has an empty box
3. The leader takes each object out of the box one by one and passes them to the other leader who puts them in their box
4. Once all the objects have been passed, each player or patrol writes down everything they can remember
Kims Game #6 - Unseen Objects
1. In the dark, or with hands behind backs, pass around your selected objects. Girls are to feel the objects and memorise
2. At the end of the passing around, girls write their list
Kims Game #7 - Picture Memory
1. Put up a large poster or several pictures up on the wall before the unit meeting begins
2. Towards the end of the meeting, remove the pictures, then ask the girls to describe them
Kims Game #8 - M&M's Memory
1. Hide M&M's under cups or milk bottle lids or something similar to cover the M&M
2. Girls take it in turns to pick up two covers. If they get two with matching colours they can eat both of them. If they don't match cover them again without eating them
Kims Game #9 - Miming "Kims"
1. Give a list of simple actions to a patrol or small group, which they each perform in turn in front of the rest of the unit or all perform at the same time for 15 seconds
2. Then questions are asked to see who was the most observant e.g. who used the hammer? Which shoe did Jill do up?
Kims Game #10 - Still Life "Kims"
1. Three Guides sit on a chair each showing a different attitude/expression e.g. arms crossed, hand under chin, gazing at roof, etc. The rest of the Guides watch but are not told anything, until the three get up.
2. Everyone then is given the instruction to sketch (can use stick figures) the position of head, legs, arms, hands and facial expression of the three Guides who were on the chairs
Other Ideas:
- Ask a friend to call in for a few minutes. When they have left ask the girls to describe them
- Ask a friend to visit/call in to your meeting, ask them to bring a handbag/bag with interesting objects in it. They should at an arranged time, drop the bag with the all contents spilling out. After they have picked everything up one at a time and returned to the bag, everyone is asked to list the contents
