Global Wealth Biscuit Game

Resources

 20 biscuits
(Other food items can be also be used)

Instructions

Introduction
Help Senior Branchers see connections with people around our world. Bring a justice perspective to how our world currently works.

Instructions
Explain that the group represents the population of our world. Divide into three uneven groups, as below, or as close as possible. Explain that the biscuits represent the wealth in our world.
Distribute biscuits unevenly as listed below. Encourage everyone to share them among the group they are in. Give a few minutes to eat them. Prompt if needed: ‘Are you sharing?’, ‘How does this feel?’

Group A, 1-2 Senior Branchers: High Wealth 7% 17 biscuits
Group B, 3 Senior Branchers: Medium Wealth 21% 2.5 biscuits
Group C, 10 Senior Branchers: Low Wealth 71% 0.5 biscuits

Note: Some of the figures have been rounded up or down to allow for full numbers. Wealth and population statistics taken from: protothema.gr/files/1/2015/10/14/ekthsi_0.pdf – pg.24

Debrief/Discussion
• Reflect and discuss actions during the activity. Did some of you ask for more biscuits; did some offer to share, as they had more than they needed?
• Ask questions such as:
» How did your group feel? Was there disagreement in your group?
» Was the distribution fair?
» Who had the most and least power?
• Ask participants to de-role (perhaps shaking their hands and feet and regrouping). Present the percentages and wealth amounts. Ask the group the following questions:
» Does this distribution surprise you? What surprises you most?
» Do you think it’s fair? Why? Why not?
» In which category do you think the average Irish person lies?
(Answer: Group 1)
