Introduction
In September 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. For the goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part, including governments, the private sector, civil society and all global citizens, including here in Ireland. Goal 13: Climate Action outlines five targets to ‘take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts’.

Instructions:
Brainstorm all of the issues/concepts that you examined in the previous SDG 13 Climate Action activities.

In order of importance, rank the issues you feel are most pressing and need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Once you reach consensus on a chosen issue, use the Why? Why? Why?-Chain as a way to look deeper into the issue and highlight some of the points that need to be addressed, thereby creating a Tree shape as attached. Complete the chain on flip-chart paper. See why? why? why? attachment. For example, why is so much food wasted? … People buy more than they need; … why do people buy more than they need? … They don’t plan what they need to eat ... and so on.

Ask the groups to add to the Tree with Post-it notes an action that could be taken to address one of the Whys at the end of the chain. Encourage the Senior Branchers to consider the different ways we can take action to bring about change (e.g. awareness raising, lobbying, fundraising, school project, climate march, petition).

Debrief
Discuss your potential actions and the best approach to take.
