Instructions
Begin by playing Poopla activity to demonstrate what happens if you don't have established toilet facilities. (15 minutes). Don't tell them the meaning of the game in advance. Let them keep their own score. Corks work well as "turds"! Maybe allow them three turns each.
Ask "What facilities do we have?" - flush toilets, mains drainage, sewage plant, basin, soap and towel!
Think about facilities in the third world where they need to create their own toilets. What happens if they don't? - contaminated land, water source, disease, diahorrea, death
Hand out the toilet design pictures and ask each group to work out:
- how the facility works
- what advantages does it have
- what disadvantages
Allow 5 minutes
Groups to feedback to meeting on their findings (ideally project the picture they are talking about so all can see). (10 minutes)
Show the Cranfield video (search Cranfield Gates Toilet on YouTube)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A47slzMItAI (5 minutes)
Show the WaterAid Composting Latrine video (search WaterAid composting latrine on YouTube)

Play a game (15 minutes)
Remote Camp toileting (10 minutes)
Show a picture of Scouts on remote camp
How do you apply what you have learned to toileting arrangements?
- designate an area
- think about water source contamination, privacy, wind & exposure, footpaths
- dig a hole
- burn paper
- replace turf
- leave no trace
- make sure you wash your hands!
