Spring Equinox Widegame

Description

Two opposing Saxon Tribes compete to secure the Ancestral Relics (The Egg of Thought & the Shimmering Hares) needed to celebrate the Spring Equinox.


Resources

8x 2' wooden rods (cut down broomsticks are ideal)
1x football or equivalent (a high visibility or fluorescent ball is ideal)
Fluorescent Jackets / vests (for the hares)
2x Base Flags

If available:
Leader radios for co-ordination / safeguarding (Monitoring Scout channels + Leader channel)
Hunter Wolf radios (should be setup the same as the Leader radios or at least setup to monitor the Scout channels)
2x Scout radios set to channel A (allows for a more strategic game over a wider area)
2x Scout radios set to channel B (allows for a more strategic game over a wider area)

Instructions

Two opposing Saxon Tribes are both attempting to return the Egg of Thought and as many Shimmering Hares as they can back to their base to win the game.

One tribe follows the Goddess Ostara <oS-tara> and the other follow the Goddess Eostre <EST-ruh>

Each tribe are given 4 Sacred Rods, 2 Stones of Talking and a Base flag - give the teams 5min to choose a suitable location for their base that must be out in the open, at least 2m away from any hedge or barrier and within the predefined game area.

The Egg of Thought can only be touched and carried with the Sacred Rods (any other means used to move or transport the Egg should result in that team loosing control of the egg).

The Shimmering Hares can only be captured by being held by their forearm by one person. Once captured they must be fully compliant until they are either no longer being held by their forearm or are held by more than one person. The Leaders undertake this role and should ensure that they are distributed across the game area at all times.

Any Explorers present form the Hunter Wolves. The Hunter Wolves do not wear any high visibility vests or jackets, can release the Shimmering Hares from captivity and as they are wild creatures of the land are able to directly take hold of the Egg of Thought. It is important to stress to the Explorers that without diminishing their own fun, their role is to frustrate both teams equally but not to the extent that the teams want to just give up. A tactic of light skirmishes in small packs would be very in-keeping with the role and should not just be limited to team groups that have captured one of the Ancestral Relics.


Whistle Commands:

1 long blast - Game Start
2 medium blasts - Game End
3 quick blasts - Return immediately to the predefined meeting point (Also used as the Emergency Recall command)


Note: Whilst this Widegame is primarily aimed at Scouts in it's current form, it can easily be simplified for the younger sections by removing the team radios and reducing the play area accordingly. Equally this can be used as is or scaled up for use by the older sections.
