Description

A chance for Cubs (or Scouts) to have fun doing creative writing and earn one of the creative elements of their skills challenge.

Resources

Pen or pencil and paper

Example poems:

Limerick 1

A Scout leader from Kingston named Peter
Repeatedly sat on a heater
When asked to explain why
He refused to reply
But claimed that the heater was neater.

Limerick 2

A Scout Leader from Kingston named Wendy
Delighted in dressing real trendy
So dressed in a scarf
Did not make her laugh
Unless it was wrapped round the bendy.

Limerick 3

There was a cub leader named Sanchez
Who was constantly getting the munchies
When asked round to tea
He chuckled with glee
And came despite eating five lunches

The Trangia Rap!

Stoves are lit but can be hot
Being silly round them - I think not!
It can make tea that's nice with a biscuit
Put your hand near it - I wouldn't risk it!
Let's all face it, stoves can be fun
But really they're useless - water heats in the sun!

As written and performed by Jo O'Neill (Scout)

Instructions

Task the Cubs with writing either a limerick, a rap, or a poem.

Explain that:
- a limerick is a poem of 5 lines with a rhyming scheme aabba (point out how limericks are often about people similar to campfire songs like "Quarter Master's Stores")
- Rapping is a musical form of vocal delivery that incorporates "rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular", which is performed or chanted in a variety of ways, usually over a backing beat or musical accompaniment

Recite examples of rap and limerick poems (see examples) and either hand out print outs on paper or project them so that Cubs can refer to them as they work.

Each Cub should spend 5 minutes writing down their own ideas (no matter how bad).
Each six should then review these ideas to come up with one "poem" to perform to the rest of the Pack.

It is probably best to have an adult or young leader with each six to help the sixer to stay on task and then complete the finished poem with input from all Cubs.

Perform the poems.
