Description

This activity can be done near the sea. or anywhere where you can be sure there are crabs to catch!


Resources

- Crabbing Lines. normally one between two but can be one each.
- Bait (We use bacon or squid. The smellyer the better.)
- Buckets enough to keep everyones crabs.
- Additional Helpers. The more the merrier.

Instructions

> Find a spot near the water and check tide times.
> Place the bait in to the nets or hooks. it helps to have someone who just does this as cubs will be back to you for help a lot.
> Let the children (with supervision) try to catch the crabs.
> At the end, count all the crabs for fun then find a safe place to release them back in to the water.
> Teach the Scouts that it is important to release them back in to the water as we are only doing this for fun.
> Remember to wash hands and sanitise all equipment after the activity (and before handling any food/eating)

Depending on your Risk Assessment consider whether buoyancy aids / lifejackets are appropriate.

The following guidance has been confirmed by the Support Centre (June 2024) as relevant for crabbing:
"crabbing and river dipping (without entering the water) would need to follow the guidance in POR 9.1 for all activities and POR 9.1.1.3 other activities "
