Description

Explorers to split into pairs to plan & organise a camp
Each pair should identify a suitable weekend that does not clash with existing events / other sections using equipment
Each pair should then work through all of the "before you go" requirements as far as possible, with due consideration for the "during the camp" requirements

Following the session, each pair should then continue to plan their camp, liaising with the leaders for booking campsites & activities, etc

Instructions

Take the role of camp leader during a camping weekend (or longer), involving at least eight people.
Note - if on an Event Passport, all 8 people must be aged under 18 on the first day of the camp; otherwise, at least 2 of the 8 people will be adult leaders (one of which must have a campsite (or greenfield) nights away permit

Before you go:
* discuss all aspects of the camp with an adult leader - there must somebody qualified to first response (or higher) on site at all times, transport to/from site, programme (activity) plan, prepare NAN form
* manage the budget for the camp - transport, campsite fees, cost of activities, food, etc - max cost per participant £40 (for 8 people this is £320), and leaders should not be charged, event should make a very slight surplus
* choose the campsite, carrying out a risk assessment of the camp and activities - is it available, how will you find out, provisional booking
* make sure all necessary equipment is organised - does it clash with any other sections wanting to use equipment, etc
* plan a menu and organise the shopping - this can potentially be combined with the Chef activity badge (done by another Explorer)

During the camp:
* organise the pitching of the campsite - draw a campsite plan showing how tents will be laid out
* make sure that camp hygiene standards are met - consider tent inspections (when will they be done), how will cooking equipment be washed, personal hygiene, etc
* make sure that all equipment is stored correctly - take a mess tent or marquee
* build a pioneering project, for example a flagpole or a gateway - where are the poles & ropes coming from
* demonstrate safe knife and axe use - Explorer organising needs to do some of the firewood chopping, but not necessarily all
* plan a cooking and cleaning rota and cook at least one of the meals yourself - this can potentially be combined with the Chef activity badge (done by another Explorer)
* organise the striking of camp and make sure the site is left as you would wish to find it - how much time is needed, what if it is wet
