Description

Programme Plan to cover the requirements for Paddle Sports - Stage 2 while out on the water
1. Lift, carry and launch a boat.
2. Paddle forward in a straight line.
3. Show you can steer around a course.
4. Show you can stop the boat safely.
5. Show you can exit the boat onto the shore safely.
6. Capsize, swim to the shore and empty the boat of water.

Also covers part of the Adventure Challenge Badge
2. Show how you have developed your skill and expertise in one of these activities. Show that you know the safety issues involved and that you can use any equipment needed for the activity safely.
3. Learn about any environmental issues caused by your activity. Take steps to reduce any harm to the environment.
4. Research other ways you can take part, or develop your skills, in your chosen activities. Follow up your research with action!

Instructions

1. Instructor to demonstrate correct manual handling of boats. Scouts to copy by working in groups to move the boats from the trailer to the bank. Scouts to prepare the boats by untying any painters on canoes or adjusting foot pedals in kayaks.

2. Instructors to talk about the environmental impact of paddle sports; bank erosion, litter, disturbing wildlife, etc.

3. Scouts to split into groups of 2/3 boats with an Instructor with each group. Instructor to go over paddling in a straight line, steering, and stopping. Scouts are then to practice these skills on the water.

4. After the paddling skills are complete, paddle back to near the portage point. Scouts are then to capsize, swim to the shore with their boat and then empty the boat.

5. At the end of the session, Instructors are to talk about the other ways of getting involved with paddle sports and the local clubs, different variations of paddle sports; slalom, white water, touring, sea kayaking, paddle boarding, etc.
