Description
Teams of 4 Scouts complete an overnight expedition carrying all equipment to cook and camp.
Checkpoints to be provided to groups and scouts are to submit route plans 7 days prior to expedition beginning.
The winning team will be based upon time to complete expedition, route planning, challenges, combined age of teams etc.
The event will award Expedition Challenge to completing participants
Resources
Each group should have:
a small first aid kit which includes foil blanket, bandages and plasters
a sealed envelope containing the medical forms for each member of the group (copy Medical forms also held at control point)
a mobile phone put into a sealed bag at the start (kept in tamper proof bags)
Emergency sheet containing central phone number (01473 561000 – this is a virtual landline number)
at least one OS Explorer map (1:25,000) map covering the area (
two appropriate compasses i.e. Silva classic or Silva Range (or other brand equivalent)
All participants to have high vis – stress in instructions this shouldn’t be covered by rucksacks. Put over rucksack if needed
Organising persons
Checkpoints to have at least two leaders / adult helper / Explorer
Radio sets and transmitter. Each checkpoint to have radio; transmitter located at base control
each checkpoint could be young leaders as part of their progression
Instructions
Groups of between 4 and 6 people
Each group assigned a number or name
Stagger start of groups max 10 minute intervals (any longer and they’ll get bored waiting to start)
Scouts carry all their kit with them. This includes:
All clothing, sleeping and eating equipment
food for lunch, dinner and breakfast
cooking equipment - Trangias cooking on meths NOT GAS (meths in appropriate containers)
At least 2 litres of water
First aid kit
Maps, compasses and emergency equipment and card
Routes should include specified checkpoints (These are lettered A-G for Saturday and A-C Sunday).
Teams must to ‘check-in’ .
Adults at checkpoints to have some form of ID – 5 minute penalty if the kids don’t ask to see it
A Challenge will be set at each checkpoint ( challenge to be max time 10 mins per group)
Each challenge to carry a points award from 1 to 10 (10 being maximum).
Record in and out times of teams at each checkpoint and the challenge score.
Times logged by someone at Boxford with a radio and laptop – Suggest Paul Newby plus someone to operate radio. I’ll speak to Paul
Final clock stops once when tents are pitched?
For the competition assessment:
Add up total walking time for each group (excluding time spent at checkpoints);
take off challenge points (each point awarded is equal to 1 minute deduction from overall time);
add 120 minute time penalty for use of mobile phone;
divide total time (minutes) by the average age of each group;
To find winner
0900 start on Saturday.
A short break at each checkpoint and say a 30 minute lunch at Assington
All groups should be finished walking by about 5pm on the Saturday
Need some leaders at Boxford to allocate camping space – after that we’re hands-off and letting kids arrange their own campsites and dinner
Saturday Route is:
Scouts dropped off at Bures scout campsite.
Hike from Bures to Boxford (via Assington) then camp overnight
Sunday Route is
Boxford back to Assington via a slightly different route.
Scouts pickup at Assington Village Hall car park around 1pm.
