Climate Change - Extinction Rebellion

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

An activity that explores an international issue for the Scouts World Challenge badge. An opportunity for the Scouts to discuss whether climate change is an issue or a hoax. Let them debate in patrols, then present back to the troop, then decide individually what they support. Print off A4 protest signs from "Extinction Rebellion" and "Team Trump" and end with a mini protest in the scout hut, asking the Scouts to support what they believed in. A 60 min activity ending with a bit of fun.

Instructions

1. Introduce climate change as an issue, explain young people are protesting around the world but others say that it is exaggerated.
2. Play soundbites. I chose the Sept 2019 speech to the UN by Greta Thunberg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAJsdgTPJpU&t=58s) and a bit of a Trump speech (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl1Rnz4zNkg OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqgMECkW3Ak)
3. Allocate research tasks by patrol and get them to each feed back to the troop ( one what extinction rebellion believe, one the case that proves climate change is an issue, one the things the trump campaign has said, an another what the sceptics say.
4. Get them to decide and join "Team Trump" or "Extinction Rebellion" then march around the Scout hut and make some noise. We then had a vote too.
