19 November is World Toilet Day. This session using resources from Water Aid is aimed at Scouts, but could work with Explorers.
Resources
Videos on a laptop
Cholera game: cups, water, white vinegar
washing up bowls, jugs, water, cloths to mop up the water!
Water filter: 2l pop bottle, sand, gravel, activated charcoal, cotton wool, cotton square, water, dirt
Physics of flushes: paper cups, plastic straws, "waterproof clay" (I have tried blu tak and plastercine - neither worked well, no ideas what might work better)
Tippy tap: broom stick, wooden tent peg, bungee cord or old bike inner tube, string or duct tape (this is what I used, but other materials would also work)
extras: print out quiz, print and cut out matching activity,
game: cups, jugs
Instructions
1. Discussion of why we need clean water and a way to deal with sewage. What kind of toilet have you ever used etc. See notes for video link on flying toilets.
2. Cholera simulation game
3. 3 activity bases, can be run as a rotation, or consecutively
4. Regroup and discuss issues and possible fundraising ideas
extra activities: quiz, matching puzzle, game
