Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
2. Make, build or draw something to represent a country.
Resources
Clean recycling, glue, sticky tape, glue gun, other art materials. Also could be done with lego.
Instructions
One person's rubbish is another person's landmark: From Scout webpage: https://scouts.org.uk/activities/one-persons-rubbish-is-another-persons-landmark/
Turn your recycling into a famous landmark from another country, then discover what life is like there.
Activity Outcomes: Know that you’re a local, national, and international citizen, and understand your responsibilities.
Youth shaped guidance:
Young people can choose the country they’d like to explore, and the landmark they’d like to build. You could ask Cubs to vote on countries the week before you do this activity, and ask them to find out about their team's chosen country at home.
Arrange all of the clean recycling into a pile.
Split into groups, and give each a travel brochure, book, or set of landmark images.
Each team should pick a landmark from another country – it can be another country inside the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland), or a country outside of the UK.
Using the recycling, sticky tape, and scissors, each group should recreate their landmark.
Teams should take one or two items at a time from the pile, to share the resources evenly.
Once the models are complete, give each group some Post-it notes or slips of paper and a pen.
Ask each group to write facts about their chosen country’s currency, language, national dress, culture, and customs, and stick these facts to their model.
Teams can use their books or brochures, as well as anything they may already know.
Gather all of the teams together. Teams should guess the landmark each model is based on, and the country it represents.
Once everyone has guessed, teams should break down their models and remove the sticky tape, so that items can be recycled.
Reflection
This activity reminds you that you’re a local, national, and international citizen.
Do you know more about the world now? What would you like to ask someone from your chosen country?
Are some parts of their lives like yours?
Would it be easier to work with someone from your chosen country now you know a bit more about their home?
Do you share any of the same responsibilities?
This activity will also help you respect and trust people from backgrounds different to yours.
Does knowing more help you understand how to respect people from all different backgrounds?
How can you show someone that you respect them?
Would you understand someone from your chosen country better now that you know more about it?
Safety
Ensure all recycled materials are clean and free from sharp edges.
All activities should be part of your risk assessment and meet Scout guidelines, including ratios, approval and consent.
All activities must be safely managed. Do a risk assessment and take appropriate steps to reduce risk. Always get approval for the activity and have suitable supervision and an InTouch process.
