Description
Through segregating Scouts on the basis of traits over which they have no control this interactive exercise enables the Scouts to experience the feeling & impact of discrimination
Resources
Large pack of elastic Bands, 2 senior helpers & activity facilitator
Instructions
This activity is to be run part way through the meeting when there is some tidying up required.
Gather Scouts against a wall and then call out Scouts for each of the following lines to collect an elastic band from the 1 of the 2 helpers (they check if they qualify) if they;
- can curl their tongue
- have blues eyes
- can make the Vulcan salute
- can touch their toes without bending their knees
- assemble them in size order (shortest to tallest), divide group and award tallest part or group
- have long hair
- can click their fingers
- are left handed
- and so on (amend as necessary)
Scouts all gather back at the wall after each statement ready for the next 'if they....'
Finally, ask Scouts to line up in order of who has the most to least elastic bands, divide the group and announce half can go an play a game (dodgeball) and the other half must stay and clear up before joining in.
After the game, reflect & discuss the fairness, how the Scouts felt and parallel examples in the real world concluding with providing the definition of discrimination 'the unjust or prejudical treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age or sex'
