Description
Create the Royal Shield of arms by collecting coins, sticking them to a background sheet. This activity will contribute to a Beaver's collectors badge and a creative activity and also an experiment and cretive. This description and resource is designed for Beavers but could easily be adapted for other sections.
Resources
Coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10, 20p and 50p) from 2008 onwards - they need to have the coin on them! (If possible from the year they were born)
Tomato ketchup / brown sauce
Washing up liquid
Water
Card / strong paper
Printer
Paper towels
Bowls
Hot Melt Glue and Guns / Glue Dots from Hobby Craft?
Picture frames (we used 13cm x 8cm frames but could easily be adapted)
A4 or bigger pic of the Royal Coat of Arms
Instructions
A couple of weeks before
Provide Beavers / parents with a few weeks notice that they need to collect 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins. Perhaps with the additional challenge of having all the coins from the birth year of the Beaver (not crucial). Remember to collect some spares!
Before the meeting
Print the coin shield template (included as a resource) - cut to size of frame.
On the night
Provide each beaver with a bowl (probably labelled with their name as they arrive so that they can put their coins in it!)
Ask them how they might clean the coins - water / Ketchup / Soap and water?
Suggest some use each of the options and see who's works best. - Experiment.
Talk about why ketchup works - Acid in the ketchup helps to cut through the acid and polishes the metal.
Provide them all with the winning option - ketchup - and some paper towels and get them to clean each coin
Get the Beavers to wash their coins in warm soapy water (warm if possible)
Get the Beavers to dry their coins and put them in their bowl!
As they are drying talk about the different elements of the Shield of Arms:
3 Lions - from King Richard the Lionheart
Single Lion from King William 1 - symbol of Scotland
Harp - symbol of Ireland
Designer was Matt Dent who won a competition in 2008
Whilst the Beavers play a game, the leaders can use the hot melt glue to stick the coins onto a printed shield - or you get the Beavers to stick them on with Glue Dots from Hobby Craft
Beavers or leaders can then assemble the frame - may depend on the frame, the ones from Ikea have a plastic front so all safe :-).
Present each Beaver with their shield as they leave!
