Instructions
Give each Ladybird a copy of the worksheet and ask them to find all the words which are listed along the side.
With all things in society, there are many rules that we must follow. There are some rules for cycling which are very important to ensure all our Ladybirds are safe when out cycling. Now is a perfect time to go through some of these with your Ladybirds:
Top bicycle safety rules
1. Always wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet to protect your head, every time you cycle.
2. Use a bicycle that is the appropriate size for you, not one that is too big.
3. Before you cycle make sure that you don’t have any loose clothing or shoelaces that can get caught in the chain.
4. Ask an adult to check the air in your tyres and that your brakes are working before you cycle.
5. Always wear bright clothes so that you can be seen at all times.
6. Stay alert at all times and never listen to music. Pay attention to all vehicles and people around you.
7. Don’t cycle in the dark. If you must, wear reflectors and ensure your bike has reflective lights.
8. Always check both sides of the roads before you pull out onto a new road.
9. Learn and follow the rules of the road.
The rules of the road are as follows:
1. When cycling on the road, always cycle on the left-hand side (the same direction as the traffic).
2. Obey traffic laws, including all the traffic signs and signals.
3. Cycle in a straight line and don’t weave in and out of traffic.
4. If cycling on the footpaths, always respect pedestrians. Ring your bell to make them aware of you.
5. Watch the road to avoid anything that could cause you to fall off your bike.
