Coloured pens or pencils
A4 paper
Comic strip templates (see tile attachment)
Other craft items (optional)
Printed pictures to copy (optional)
Take it further
You could develop the activity by introducing a theme, so this activity also works towards another badge requirement.
For example, if they use their comic to explain the dangers of playing on or near places like farmyards, rivers, and railways, groups will be working towards their Cub Personal Safety Activity Badge.
Telling the story of a famous person who lived in or near their area would help towards their Cub Local Knowledge Activity Badge.
Explaining what to do about a burst water pipe or gas leak would help towards their Home Safety Activity Badge.
Instructions
1. Split into pairs, threes, or small groups. Give each group some pens and pencils, the comic strip template, and some plain paper. [If you have a theme, explain it now. ]
2. Each group should come up with a story. The person leading the activity might want to explain all of the structure at the beginning, or they might want to go through a stage at a time.
3. First, groups need to choose a main character, and imagine where they live (their setting). They should draw their character and setting as the first two panels of their comic – it’s up to each group whether they use the template provided or the plain paper.
4. Next, they need to introduce a problem. Groups should draw the problem, how their character tries to fix it, and what happens when it doesn’t work.
5. Despite their character’s best efforts, the problem gets worse! Groups should draw what happens.
6. Thankfully, their character asks their friends for help. Groups should draw this scene – how does the main character ask for help? What do their friends look like?
7. Now, the team of friends try again to solve the problem, working together this time. Groups should draw their attempt, showing their teamwork.
8. The team’s solution works! Groups should draw the solution, and add a happy ending.
Change the level of challenge
Adapt the level of prompts groups are given – they could use the templates provided, be given more detailed prompts (for example ideas for problems and solutions), or use blank sheets of paper to come up with their own story entirely.
