Description

This activity was completed over a few weeks. each activity took a different set of time depending on the Zoom meeting we were doing. These activities will complete the first level of the Navigation staged badge. The activity entails majority online zoom activities with one outside activity.

Instructions

Battleships-
send template to children and ask them to print or copy the grid
children draw their battleships onto their grid and leave second grid blank
play standard game of battleships with each child taking a turn at (shooting) the battleships.
children and adults say when their battleship has been hit, one adult monitor who's battleship have been sunk.

Compass point powerpoint-
Talk to children about the 4 points of a compass and why they are useful
ask the children to identify which colour is which compass point (follow powerpoint)
the town grid activity involves the children starting at the yellow dot and following the leaders instruction (e.g. north 2 squares, east 5 squares etc.)
the aim of the activity is for the directions to lead to a place on the map e.g. the zoo

Map symbols powerpoint:
map symbols Bingo using the first slides symbols. Children draw/write six of the symbols shown on the screen then proceed to play bingo. first child with all six of their symbols crossed off wins.
next slides are OS maps with certain symbols on. children must count how many symbols they can see on the map.

The final activity I set for the children to do at home. discuss with children in zoom meeting about equipment the children would need to go on a walk. I sent a map screenshot of our church meeting place and placed a 10x10 grid over the top of it. The children were given a grid reference and needed to walk with their parents to that location. placed a pot with paper, pens and sanitizer inside for the children to write their names on the sheet of paper.
