Instructions
ADAPTATIONS FOR AUTUMN:
- Use autumnal coloured paper (i.e. an appropriate colour for leaves in the autumn)
- As the introduction about being thankful - use the example of harvest & link to the Food Bank
--
HARVEST & FOOD BANKS:
Once a crop has grown and is ready to eat, the farmer must collect it from the fields. This is known as harvest. Harvest festivals are celebrations of food grown from the land. It is giving thanks for crops which have been safely and successfully harvested. It is celebrated worldwide and is an ancient tradition.
For Christians, harvest is a reminder of the good things that God gives them. Christians thank God for the food during the harvest festival. They believe God made the world and everything in it, and so thank God for the variety of food and everything that helps the food to grow.
Many people who are fortunate enough to have plentiful supplies of food, want to share with others who are not so fortunate. They may decide to donate to things called food banks. Food banks are nationwide and provide emergency food and support to people who need it. Once food has been donated it is sorted and then stored. Then people who are in need are identified and given a voucher, which they can redeem for three days’ emergency food.
---
Start by explaining what the activities will be about:
First Write & Read
Then Story
Give the beavers an introduction about being thankful (^)
--
WRITE:
Get the beavers to draw round their hands
Then they cut out their handprints
Get them to write their name on the thumb
Then get them to write or draw a picture of something they are thankful for on the palm
READ:
Then let the beavers tell someone, what they have written/drawn on their hand
If they want, and there is time, then some may want to share theirs in front of the colony
Then get them to stick their hand reflections in a space on the branches of the tree
--
TELL A STORY:
See if any of the beavers can remember and recite part or all of their promise if they would like
Go over the promise - "I promise to do my best, to be kind and helpful, and to love God/our world." Then explain to the beavers that their promise will be related to the story, and get them to be thinking of that when they listen and where it may be relevant
Read the attached story to the beavers, using (x3) leaders as the three characters
Then discuss how their story relates to their promise
Read story again (1 leader) and use the trigger words - for when selected beavers jump up
