Resources
ONLINE
A 10x10 cell grid or table on MS Excel/Word/Powerpoint or Google Sheets/Docs/Slides - whatever you are comfortable with. For a simpler challenge, start with 5x5 grid.
Optional: either mark the columns A, B, C etc and rows 1, 2, 3 etc OR just use the Excel/Sheets labels if using ones of these apps.
Printed answer grid sheets (for the leader only).
I have made a unity game for windows a leader can use to automatically generate the grids and to run this activity. Direct download link: https://github.com/abrackers/Labyrinth/releases/download/v1.0/Labyrinth.exe
Github repository link (source code access): https://github.com/abrackers/Labyrinth
Be able to "Share" the app in Zoom screen-share so everyone can see it.
FACE TO FACE
A 10x10 cell grid marked out on the floor - use tape, chalk or anything that clearly marks the grid.
Each square needs to be big enough for a person to stand within it.
For a simpler challenge, start with 5x5 grid.
Printed answer grid sheets (for the leader only).
Instructions
IN SECRET: Leader to mark out ONE correct path across the labyrinth on your answer grid. You may want to do this in advance. Make two or three.
FOR EACH ROUND:
Mark a starting square on the PLAYER grid.
One person enters the labyrinth at the start square.
On each 'move' the player tries to find the correct path by testing each square.
The player may move ONE square at a time. They can move north, south, west or east. NOT diagonally.
After each 'move' the game leader indicates if the play is on the correct path.
With a CORRECT move the player can have another turn.
With an INCORRECT move the player is expelled from the labyrinth - with only the memory of their path.
The NEXT player steps forward and takes their chances.
Other players CAN help by offering suggestions.
When they "escape" the maze (follow your correct path) show the players the answer grid.
Good communication, good listening skills, excellent cooperation and careful organisation between the group are required to master the maze.
REFLECTION:
What did it feel like to be in the maze (face to face only)?
Could you have done it faster?
What worked well?
What didn't work well?
What would you do differently next time?
TIPS (GENERAL):
Players will tend to assume the finish is on the opposite edge to the start - mix it up!
Players will tend to assume a single pathway through the maze - mix it up with paths that split and meet up again, and throw in a dead end (or two).
Keep one clear square on either side of the path to make the logic easier.
Drop a few hints if it's taking too long or a player has more trouble than others remembering the route. Give second chances if they miss the known path.
TIPS FOR PLAYING ONLINE:
Mark the player's journey and position on the grid with a letter or shape, but DO clear the trail for the next player (so they have to recall the path)! If this proves too time consuming leave some of the path (remove the last 4 or 6 squares) and start at the end of the path.
Optional: Have players use Row/Column coordinates to make clear where the player is moving to.
