Resources

Leader - slides from Google Drive (you may need to "fix" the video embedded in the slides or run it from the host screen)

At home - session assumes an adult is with the Beaver throughout. A sticky plaster if available.

Instructions

Introduce the session.
Show slide 2 "what can you see..." and ask children to spend 2 minutes investigating the picture and discuss what they can see with their parents/adult. Go around the Beavers and invite them to share one thing each that they noticed.
Key elements are: they should check that it’s safe to help; Ask for help if there are adults around. ; Comfort the injured person ; If it’s a serious accident, an adult should call 999.
SEE THE SCOUTS.CO.UK SOURCE MATERIAL FOR MORE GUIDANCE.

Show slide 3 "explain to an adult..." and ask children to spend 2 minutes exploring the statements in more depth. You could ask them to look at all 4 or split the participants into groups and give one (or 2) statements each. You could use breakout rooms on Zoom for this bit if you are putting two different callers into the same group.

Show slide 4 "what can you see..." and ask children to spend a further 2 minutes investigating the picture and discuss what they can see with their parents/adult. Go around the Beavers and invite them to share one thing each that they noticed.
Key elements are: check it’s safe to help; if there are no adults around, they should shout to get someone’s attention or run and find a trusted adult; Comfort the person; If it’s a serious accident, an adult should call 999 for help. SEE THE SCOUTS.CO.UK SOURCE MATERIAL FOR MORE GUIDANCE.

Show slide 5 "Calling 999" - explore calling 999 in more detail. If an adult can not make the call, a child can. Explore the 4 statements. Watch the video and ask beavers to spot the answers to the 4 statements. Check they understand what is and IS NOT a real emergency. You could make up some silly examples. Check everyone is OK to continue.

Show slide 6 - this is an online version of the PUT IN ORDER activity from First Responders - https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/first-responders/
With their adult, invite the children to put the 6 statements in the correct order. The answer sequence is: 6, 4, 2, 3, 5, 1. Discuss different peoples answers.

IF THERE IS TIME - lead an activity about how to treat a small cut or bruise. The children should practice at home with a parent - they could apply a plaster to the adults hand, if they have a plaster.
