Description

In this session Beavers will learn how to tie the reef knot at home.
This is for the The Great Indoor Badge, Stage 1, Practical Skills.
It will also go towards Beavers Camp Craft Activity Badge, part 4: Learn how to tie a reef Knot. And will help towards Beavers Outdoors Challenge Award, Part 2: Learn how to tie three simple knots.

You can make it more fun buy using sweet laces, subject to dietary requirements.

Resources

Two pieces of string, rope or laces, ideally two different colours.
Why not make it even more fun and get liquorice and strawberries laces.

Instructions

1. Cross the black lace behind the red lace,
2. Then loop it over and under the red that face upwards and
3. Pass the left (red) end over and through the black (right) end.
4. Hold all four ends and gently pull, then tighten the knot in place.

Alternatively
1. Pass the black lace over the red lace and tuck it under, as you say ‘left over right and under’.
2. Pass the red lace over the black lace and tuck it under, as you say ‘right over left and under’.
3. Pull the four ends showing the reef knot shape.

You will notice the reef knot on the Scouts badge, it symbolises the strength and unity of Scouts across the world.
