Navigation Exercise from Binley Woods - Coventry

Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK

Description

Navigation Exercise around the wood and footpaths at the back of the Speedway.
Scouts should already know how to navigate by this stage, this is not to teach navigation.
Scouts will demonstrate to the Leaders how they can follow a route and pick out features on the map and relate them to the land and vice-versa.
This can also count towards the Navigator Staged Badges.
This is not intended as a Hike, emphasis in on Navigation Skills.

Resources

1:25000 map printout of route. Compass.
Suitable clothing for walking, such as Boots, waterproofs, fleece, walking trousers, hat, gloves, depending time of year.
Backpack not necessary unless Scouts want to carry refreshments.

Instructions

Begin at the start point. Get the Scouts to demonstrate their navigation skills, pointing out walking along footpaths, counting off hedgerows or fences in farmers fields etc, following tree lines at the edge of woods, locating buildings. This exercise is about observation and relating the map to the land and vice-versa.

There is a sketch of the map and route in the attachments. I could not upload a proper map due to copyright. The map you need is OS Landranger 222, or software with the map on.
