Promise and Law Fortune Teller from Trefoil News Jan/Feb 2015

A good activity for Pathfinders - Becoming a Guide to get to know other Guides by challenging them to say their Promise, make the Guide sign, sing Taps etc.
A good activity for the start of the Guiding year to remind Guides of their Promise, Law etc.

This paper folding activity is called many things around the world: Paku Paku is from Japan, Cootie Catchers in U.S.A., Salt Cellar in origami.

Resources

One copy of the Fortune Teller per Guide
Scissors
Colouring supplies
Folding instructions if required

Instructions

Guides decorate each blank square with something they can spell or count. e.g. colours.
Cut out the fortune teller.
Fold diagonally
Fold again to make a smaller triangle.
Trim excess to square the square.
Open out, turn design face down and start folding each corner to touch the centre point.
Turn over and fold each corner into the centre point again.
Fold in half lengthwise. Open out, fold in half the other way.
Poke fingers under the coloured in flaps to turn into the fortune teller shape.

To play:
Holding the fortune teller closed with fingers and thumbs inside the flaps, ask your partner to choose one of the 4 options.
Open and close your fortune teller in alternating directions, counting out the word or number chosen.
Your partner chooses a number from the options left open after the last move.
Open and close your fortune teller in alternating directions, counting out the number chosen.
Your partner chooses a number from the options left open after the last move.
Open that flap, your partner must complete the activity listed under their chosen number.
When complete find a new partner to challenge.

This activity is used in the Pathfinder Becoming a Guide Trifold Display Poster. Glue a cardboard pocket to your poster to store your Fortune Teller.
