Instructions

We ran this as part of a set of activities linked to Navigator Stage 2.
I wanted Cubs to have the letters to form the word COMPASS, so selected 7 different symbols whose first letter was one of those letters.
The symbols were hidden around our meeting area. Small groups of Cubs had to find one of each symbol, and could use the OS map symbols sheet to check or find out what the first letter was.
Cubs then took their symbol to a leader, told them exactly what it was, and were given the letter in exchange, to make it simpler for them to rearrange the letters to form a word.
The words from the different activities (others were RUCKSACK and BOOTS) were then used to discuss necessary equipment for a hike.
To learn more symbols, this could be run again for different words.
