What Scouts are doing at COP26
-----------------------------------------
A group of courageous young people, backed up by hundreds of thousands of individual actions, will represent #PromiseToThePlanet at the UN Climate Change Conference UK 2021 (COP26) later this year. At COP26, we’ll call politicians and changemakers ‘in’, not ‘out’ – because it’s their world too – making it clear that it’s their responsibility to make decisions in the Earth’s best interests.

=============================================================================================================================================

You don’t have to be a scientist to know that climate change is a big deal. As Scouts, we’re committed to finding a global solution because we’re led by young people – and they know whose future is at stake.

From June to November this year, 57 million Scouts from across the world will take a stand and work towards a better world by taking action to reduce climate change. They’ll get hands-on to make a difference wherever they live, use their voices to inspire decision makers, and record their actions for the planet.

This campaign will help us work towards a number of Sustainable Development Goals, including: Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water and Life On Land - to find out more, head over to the Scouts for SDGs website.

What COP26 is all about
-------------------------
COP26 is an event where leaders (and climate change experts) from lots of different countries talk about climate change and what countries are going to do about it.

COP stands for Conference of the Parties. This year is the 26th COP – that’s why it’s called COP26.

When countries are at COP, they talk about how they can reduce the emissions that cause global warming, and how they can help people adapt to the climate change that’s already happening.

Our message to global leaders
------------------------------------------------
At COP, our message to global leaders is that, together:

We must not allow global warming to rise by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
We must commit to ambitious policies that protect people and nature and build a climate-resilient society.
We must commit to making policies that are truly fair: they must require the largest contributors to climate change to take the most action.
COP26 is a big moment: it’s the first time we’ll test whether our new, stronger commitments to stop climate change are working, and it’s a chance for countries to make world-changing, planet-saving commitments. The Earth doesn’t have a voice in the discussion, but we do. And we’re going to use it.

Led by young people
------------------------------------------------------
Scouts from over 20 countries worked with the World Organization of the Scout Movement, Scouts UK, and WWF (the world’s leading independent conservation organisation) to develop #PromiseToThePlanet.

Instructions

First, introduce the activity by reading the summary in the brief description, then play the video at: https://www.scouts.org.uk/about-us/help-others/promise-to-the-planet/

1. Choose your action

Act now. Change tomorrow.

#PromiseToThePlanet covers four key areas: recover, recycle, reduce, and rethink. We’ve worked with the experts to suggest a ‘hands-on’ and a ‘use your voice’ action for each area, but it’s up to you what you do to fight climate change.

Print out a list of example promises we could make.

----Separate into patrols, and allow 30 mins to brainstorm and come up with ideas, research. Decide whether they will take action as a patrol, or in small group, or individually.------
-----Eg, as a patrol, they could try to cover all 4 areas, or just choose a single area that each individual wants to look at-------------------

2. Record your action

Use your voice and join the fight by telling us what you did, so we can keep track of the impact we’re having together. We’ll use this to show world leaders that we’re not prepared to lose our future.

Explain to scouts that we will be recording their progress from Jun-Nov and reporting what we have done to ScoutsUK.

3. Tell the world

We’re not afraid to take a stand. However you want to do it – with a video, a poster, or even a Tweet – add your voice to our movement. A global problem needs a global solution – and it’s down to us to spread the word and get everyone else on board.

We will be doing an audio recording, with each explorer saying what their promise is, or with one group spokesperson explaining what they will do, as a patrol.
