Description

Flower pressing Session

Resources

- A few sheets of A4 Plain paper
- Pens, colouring pencils or felt tips
- Heavy books to press the flowers
- Flowers and leaves you have picked from your garden. Single petal flowers work best for flower pressing, so think of daisies, buttercups, poppies and the like. You can also use leaves. (Girls might like to be organised and have the flowers and leaves in advance, advising the girls to have this in advance also helps girls who might not have access to pick flowers during the activity

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers
Introduce flower pressing, talk about how it all works, talk about the best flowers and leaves to use. Share screen to a few prepared slides so that the girls can get an idea of what the flowers will look like once pressed.
Explain to the girls that they will collect flowers and leaves away from the zoom meeting as a first activity and then that we will design and arrange our flowers as the second activity. Explain that once we have pressed the flowers into a book the final part will take place after the zoom session has ended.

Activity 1
Go outside and collect leaves and flowers. Some of the girls might have collected flowers ahead of time if they are prepared or if they don’t have access to flowers at the time the session is run, for example if they are in an apartment.

Activity 2
Arrange the flowers how they would like on the page. And decorate around the page with details such as the date, include Octagon 2021 on the page, maybe draw the Octagon logo on the page, the girls can draw pictures to accompany their flowers or design a box to go around their flowers with the colouring pencils that they have (show an example on screen).

Debrief/Discussion
Explain that they will have to put a piece of paper over their flower display and then close it up into a big heavy book.(preferably A4 or larger). Explain that they will need a few heavy books to rest on top of the book that their flowers are in. Explain that the flowers should then be left undisturbed for at least a week to 10 days, ideally longer at 2 weeks. Advise the girls to leave the flowers and books in a place where they are unlikely to be disturbed like under a bed, or in their wardrobe, or maybe a spare bedroom at home. Mention to the girls that they should let a parent or guardian know where they have put them so that they too are aware and don’t ‘tidy’ the books away. Once they have let their flowers press they can take them out of the book, explain to the girls that to preserve them they are best set in a photo frame which can be hung in their bedroom or another room in the house.
