Description
Science experiment to show that salt water is denser than fresh water
the salt water is coloured blue to represent sea water
Do the experiemnt either outside or in a basin/tray just incase of spillages.
Resources
4 small clear cups - plastic
blue and yellow food colouring
salt
spoon for stirring
2 pieces of card
warm water
Instructions
fill the 4 cups up with warm water.
add blue food colouring to 2 and yellow to the other 2.
pour 1/4 cup of salt to each of the blue glasses and stir to disolve
make sure all 4 cup are full to the top with warm water
Place a piece of card on top of 1 blue and 1 yellow cup.
carefullly pick up a yellow cup holding down the card on top and turn upside downt (the card should then hold) and place on top of the blue cup.
carefully pull the card away making sue that the mouths of the cups are touching..
Then do the same for the other 2 cups except this time the blue cup goes on top.
observe what happens.
The blue salt water is dense - this means that the molecules are packed closely together. the salt in the water makes the molecules go tigher together. the increased density makes the water go down lower than the fresh water
seas all contain salt - but some areas of seas contain more salt than other areas
