Description

A quick experiment to demonstrate the effect of CO2 and Acid on Water.

Resources

Purple cabbage water – boil purple cabbage in water until the cabbage is soft, then drain the water. It should be dark blue/purple but not too dark.
Small clear glasses/plastic cups
Vinegar
Straws

Instructions

Pour a small amount of cabbage water into 3 clear glasses:
1. Blow (a lot) into through a straw – creating CO2 - water changes to a blue colour
2. Control – water stays the same as nothing is added
3. Vinegar is added – acid changes the water to a pink colour
The colour change of the water simply demonstrates the impact both CO2 emissions and Acidification have on our water system.
Further, led discussion can relate this to the sea, rivers, water in manufacturing countries.

If possible carry out the Science Experiments the same week as working on the Fast Fashion Booklet.

If possible contact schools the Guides attend and ask if the girls could present their findings to their class in conjunction with the Fast Fashion project.
