The Bird Banquet - Outdoor activity

1. Make and design a simple bird feeder from recycled materials
2. Identify the different birds that visit our gardens
3. Identify the correct foods to feed common garden birds.


Resources

- 1l milk/orange juice carton
- String
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paints or markers or art supplies

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers
• Brief Introduction – everyone introduces themselves and says where they are from (on Zoom)
• Indoor Scavenger Hunt (find a fork, find a book, find something yellow etc.) (on Zoom)
• Approx. 15 mins

Activity 1 : Making the birdfeeder
• Quick Demonstration, on Zoom
• Zoom call stays live for questions etc. while girls make their own birdfeeder
• Link to instruction video (pre-prepared) is posted in chat for reference
• This should take between 20 and 30 mins
• Girls return to call and discuss design ideas
• 15 minutes for designing bird feeder using paint, coloured paper, markers etc.
• Call stays live but activities are done away from screen.

Activity 2: Nature and Discussion
• Quick Discussion about birds in gardens, what foods to feed them, where to hang a bird feeder etc.
• PowerPoint Presentation about common garden birds
• Approx. 10 mins
Debrief/Discussion
• Everyone shows off their birdfeeder, discusses their designs, says where they’re going to hang it etc.
• I’m allocating 10 minutes to give everyone plenty of time to explain their feeders
• End of meeting
