Fun with Fingerprints (STEAM)
1. The girls will learn about the science of fingerprints: how to take fingerprints, how to identify the main
types of fingerprints, and that everyone’s fingerprints are unique.
2. The girls will exercise their creativity and explore another angle of “fingerprinting” by making their own
fingerprint art.
3. The girls will learn the basics of how to use fingerprints to solve a simple mystery.


Resources

- Pencil
- Paper (two sheets)
- Clear (Scotch) tape
- Optional: other art supplies to decorate the drawing (e.g. crayons, coloured pencils, stickers)

Instructions

Introduction / Icebreakers
Finger Warm-Up:
• The girls will work together to create the sounds of a rainstorm using their hands/fingers.

Activity 1
Fingerprinting:
• The girls will learn about the main types of fingerprints (loop, arch, whorl) and how their fingerprints are unique to them.
• They will take their own fingerprints and identify which type of fingerprint they have.
• They will create fingerprint art – some ideas will be provided but they will be encouraged to get creative and make artwork that is unique to them!

Activity 2
Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?:
• The girls will listen to a short story about cookies stolen from a cookie jar and use their new knowledge of fingerprints to catch the thief (by matching the picture of the “crime scene” fingerprints to one of the “suspects”).

Debrief/Discussion
Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down:
• The girls will debrief on what they learned and their favourite parts of the activity by voting using the “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” signs.
