Instructions
Introduction / Icebreakers (Zoom Room 5 min)
Hello from Ireland.
A quick reminder of rules for zoom meeting:
Be kind and respectful,
Mute yourself unless you are asked to talk.
Take turns
Have Fun
Anyone who.... game? Stand up/ sit down
Has a pet, lives by the sea, has been to the beach, eats fish, has a sister, who likes boats,
who has flipflops/sandals, who has been on holidays , who likes icecream, who has an E in their name?
We are all ladybirds/ Daisies/ Rainbows etc – so we like the same things BUT, we also all like different things, and have done different things .... thats what makes it fun to meet new people and make new friends
Activity 1 - Make a Windmill (Zoom Room – 20 mins)
Put you A3 paper in front of you – draw a blue wavy line across the paper about 1/3 way down – this is the surface of the sea
Making a Pinwheel Windmill with no pin (See websites below)
-Take the square of foam and fold it into a triangle – open it up and repeat the other way with another triangle. Get your hole punch and make a whole in the centre of the long fold.
- Cut out 2 small circles and put hole punch in the centre
- Open it up and you will see folds with a hole in the middle.
-Cut along the folds about 2/3rds and stop
- Make a hole punch on right edge of each cut
- Fold each edge into the middle and gluedots or tape down to each other. Make sure the holes are on top of each other
- Take your straw and pipecleaner. Wrap the pipecleaner around the straw 3 times then feed one circle onto it, followed by the sails of the pinwheel, followed by another circle and then cut off the excess pipecleaner. Leave enough to roll it down, so no sharp edges are showing.
Take your windmill and blow it to make it move. This is wind energy and is clean and safer for our world
Lie the windmill down on the left edge of your paper – You just made your own windfarm.
Activity 2 – Design your own boat (Individual Challenge (15 Mins)
Show pictures of boats from my screen – Discuss shapes of them, Rectangle, triangle, circle(portholes)
Now go and make a boat that we can add to our seascape
Activity 3 – Scavenger hunt ( Zoom Room 10 mins)
To get us all up and moving
Find something Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo(Pink), Violet (Purple)
Notice what the girls bring back. Is it edible? Does it have packaging? Does it smell nice? Is everyone bringing back different things?
We use all our senses when we are by the sea or in the sea
Touch the sand and water, Smell the salty smell, Hear the waves and birds/ animals/ families playing
Sometimes we have to touch the rubbish/litter others have left behind. As Ladybirds we have to clean up after ourselves and bring home our rubbish. Care for the sea and the land and Leave no trace.
We collected a rainbow – you can colour in a rainbow in the sky – if you want.
Activity 4 –Toilet Roll Octopus (Zoom Room 10 mins)
You need –
● Toilet Roll insert
● A5 Sheet of Coloured paper
● Googley eyes
● Pencil (to wrap tentacles around and curl them)
● Sellotape or Pritt stick glue
● scissors
Ensure the paper is twice as long as the toilet roll. Wrap it around a secure it with tape or Glue stick
Cut eight strips from the bottom of the page up to just below the toilet roll. Take you pencil and start rolling the edge of one tentacle tightly around it up until it touches the toilet roll. Let it go and see it open but be curled up.
Activity 5 –Music (Individual 10 mins)
Play a Yellow submarine and get girls to dance.
Every time they hear the word Yellow – they have to hold up something yellow
Sing the Pirate Action song
When I was 1......
I sucked my thumb, The day I went to sea,
I climbed aboard a Pirate Ship and the Captain said to me.
We are going, This way, That way,
Forwards, Backwards, Over the Irish Sea,
A bottle of Rum, In my Tum......And that's the life for me.!!!
When I was 2 .... I buckled my shoe
When I was 3 .....I scraped my knee
When I was 4.... I slammed the door
When I was 5.... I danced a jive
When I was 6 .... I picked up sticks
Make up your own
Activity 6 – Paint your under sea fish and turtles (Zoom Room – 15 mins)
You need
● Paint
● Triangles of paper for fins and tail
● Googley eyes are optional
● Pen or pencil or marker to add detail
● A straw to add bubbles with white paint
Using your paint dip your index finger in the paint and make 2 or 3 Fingerprints on the page
below the water line. Using a glue stick, stick down your fins and tails. Wait for the paint to dry to add eyes or scales.
Then dip your straw in white paint and add air bubbles rising up from the fish’s mouth.
To do a turtle – Make a fingerprint, and draw on the head and flippers.
Debrief/Discussion ( 5 mins)
We can only easily see what is above water. From our picture we can see there is a lot more under the sea that we need to take care of. The plants under the sea provide homes for the fish and they help us by soaking up the Carbon dioxide.
We can help by taking our litter home, when we visit the beach/sea
We can help by using less plastic or recycling what we have to use.
We can ask our parents to use cleaner energy to keep us warm and give us electricity
We can help by keeping all our water clean. Our rivers flow downstream to the sea eventually.
Even though you can't see it, what you DO affects the world. As Ladybirds we try to make a better world
There are 10,000,000 (10 million) Girl Guides worldwide. If each one of us does a little bit to help we can make a BIG DIFFERENCE.
